The riches of the Mare Nostrum

Although covering just 1% of the surface of the world’s oceans, the Mediterranean is capable of providing 20% of the Gross World Marine Product. If it were an economy in its own right, it would be the fifth in the region, after France, Italy, Spain and Turkey, capable of generating about as much as the annual economy of Algeria, Greece and Morocco combined.
